Work began in 1873 and was completed in 1880. The new museum opened in 1881, although the move from the old museum was not fully completed until 1883.

I worked for this museum for a time, and near closing time, when its dark out, the lights in the museum's main hall are very dramatic. I would wait for most people to leave then bring out my camera to get images such as this one.
